Important dates from the artist's life:

about 1488/90: was born in Pieve di Cadore, near Venice
about 1500: apprenticeship at the Bellini brothers in Venice
1511: painted the frescoes in the Scuola del Santo in Padua
1513: opened his own workshop in San Samuele
1525: married and thus legitimized his first son
1527: his wife Cecilia died, giving birth to a daughter
1533: was ennobled by Emperor Karl V and announced Court painter
1545: was invited to Rome by Pope Paul III
1548: accompanied Emperor Karl V to the Diet in Augsburg
1550: accompanied Emperor Karl V once more to the Diet in Augsburg
after 1550: Philipp II, the son of Emperor Karl V, became his main employer
1555: attended the Council of Trient
1576: died in Venice of the plague
